The comment sheet, and what a comment may take back
A comment is the only thing in Stepo a person writes and then cannot touch. The step they wrote it under can be edited and deleted; their own words under it cannot. The sheet that should hold those doors ships Reply · Report · Hide, and two of the three do nothing when tapped. This board gives the comment the same two doors its step has, adds the one every reader reaches for, and clears the dead rows out.
01 Your comment
Three rows, ordered from harmless to permanent. Copy text puts the words on the clipboard; Edit comment opens the composer with them already in it; Delete comment is the sheet's only danger ink. Reply is absent because the row underneath the comment already carries it, and a sheet does not repeat what the surface behind it already offers.
The footnote is the honest half of Edit
The step's Edit row leads to a record everyone can read, and so does this one. The footnote says so before the tap, because a person deciding whether to fix a typo at midnight is entitled to know it will be visible that they did.
- The sheet names the comment it is about: your face, and the words in quotes, clamped at two lines.
- Delete is the only danger ink here, same as the step's tray.
- A reply of yours gets exactly these two rows too. Nothing about a reply is different except what its delete confirm says.
02 Someone else's comment
Two rows. Copy text, because someone else's words are the ones you actually want to keep, and Report comment in ink, because protection is not a destructive act. Nothing else on another person's words belongs to you.
Two rows, and the light one leads
It stays short, and that is the point: the alternative was padding it back out with Hide, which does nothing, and Reply, which duplicates the button already under the comment. Block is not here either. It lives on the profile, where the whole relationship is, exactly as the profile sheet ruled.
Copy is the app's first clipboard action, and it carries one requirement with it: a copy that says nothing is indistinguishable from a dead tap, which is the defect this whole board exists to clear. The sheet closes and a quiet “Copied” confirms.
- Report keeps ink. Protection isn't danger.
- Copy text, not “Copy comment”: what lands on the clipboard is the words, and there is no per-comment link for it to be confused with.
- The step owner gets no extra row on other people's comments: moderation is the moderators' tray, not the author's.
03 Editing is the composer, already filled
No screen, no modal, no second pass at anything. The composer that was waiting at the bottom of the thread fills with your words, the send glyph becomes a check, and a plain Cancel sits where the prompt was.
Editing never moves the clock
A comment carries its step-with from the moment it was posted, and editing does not touch that. A comment written at hour two keeps its step-with when it is fixed at hour thirty; a comment written at hour thirty never gains one by being edited inside a later window. Otherwise Edit would be a way to buy a place among the people who were there, and the guest book would stop being a record of who showed up.
- Only the words. Not the step it hangs under, not its time, not who wrote it.
- The live hint the composer normally carries (“Commenting now counts as stepping with…”) is replaced while editing, because it is not true of this act.
- A save that changes nothing is not an edit, and stamps nothing.
04 Edited, said on the row
The step keeps its edit record behind a sheet row, because a step is a large authored thing edited over days. A comment is one line with a timestamp already on it, so the honest place to say the words moved is beside the time they moved.
Two times, because they are two different facts
2h is when this person showed up, and it is the one the step-with turns on. Edited 20m ago is when the words moved. Collapsing them into one time would quietly restate the arrival, and the arrival is the thing the whole 24-hour window is about.
It is faint, not a chip, and it is not a door. There is nothing behind it to open: the record is the moment, and only the moment.
- Everyone sees it, not just the author. Words that move after people answered them arrive somewhere other than where they were answered.
- The Stepped with chip is untouched by an edit, because the arrival was not.
- Absent on the overwhelming majority of comments, which nobody ever edits.
05 Delete, confirmed
Step-sheet panel-03 grammar exactly: an honest sentence and a styled, labeled danger primary, because the person chose Delete from a tray. The second body is the one the step-with ruling asks for, and it appears only when it is true.
One added sentence, never a stacked sheet
The heart's withdrawal raises a sheet of its own because that tap is a toggle somebody may have hit by accident. This one is a chosen Delete, so it keeps the delete grammar and simply tells the truth in one more sentence when the deletion would also end the person's step-with.
The final clause is dropped while the step is still live, where stepping with it again is a real option: “…and its 24 hours are over” is only said when they are.
- The sentence appears only when this comment is the last act holding the step-with. The server answers that, as
holdsStepWith. - Replies never carry it. A reply was never a step-with.
- Deleting a comment leaves the hearts other people put on it alone.
06 What was cut
The shipped sheet, drawn small. All three rows are live UI in the app today, and two of them are wired to an empty function. This is the same defect the step sheet was ruled over in July, still sitting one surface away.
The two doors that were missing entirely
Nothing in the app calls the delete-comment endpoint, and no edit endpoint exists at all. A person can take back a whole step, with its media and its hearts and its step-withs, and cannot fix a typo in four words they wrote underneath somebody else's. That asymmetry is the feature this board adds.
- Backend: delete already exists and is unused; edit is new, and it is a note-only update plus the moment it happened.
- The kebab that opens this sheet needs to appear on the comment row itself, which is where panel 04 puts it.
07 Bright lines
The step's edit ruling, applied to the smaller object, plus the two lines that are only true here.
- Only the words are editable. Not the step, not the time, not who wrote it.
- Editing never moves the clock. A comment keeps the step-with it had and never gains one.
- What is never kept is the replaced text. We show that it moved, never what it used to say.
- A save that changes nothing is not an edit, and says nothing to anybody.
- Edited is said on the row, to everyone, in faint ink beside the arrival time. It is a fact, not a door.
- Rows run harmless to permanent. Copy, then Edit, then Delete in danger ink.
- A copy says so. The app's first clipboard action confirms, or it reads as a dead tap.
- A sheet earns its rows. Reply and Hide are cut; two rows is a finished sheet.
You can take back a whole step. You should be able to fix four words.
